With Magic: The New Streets of New Gathering on the horizon, Kapenna is excited to reveal the full list of his Obscura Operation Commander pre-constructed deck. Along with the first official set of new cards, I spoke with Wizards of the Coast veteran Gavin Verhey to discuss his focus on Sabotage, the rise of treasure tokens in Commander, and one of the deck’s blockbuster cards.

Like all five of New Capenna’s Commander decks, based on another of the five diabolical crime factions, Obscura Operation features 17 new magical cards. It’s a white-blue-black deck led by Kamiz, Obscura Oculus, and a strategy that focuses on using creatures that have a chance to trigger when they hit an opposing player, often called “saboteurs.”

According to Verhey, this precon has undergone more changes and modifications than the five in New Cape. “What we really wanted to capture is the feel of the Obscura,” Verhey told me, “and the Obscura of Jaunkopenna can get into any locked door, he knows all the secrets, and that was a good idea for saboteurs.” This means you’ll outsmart your opponent’s defenses to steal knowledge for yourself, often in the form of playing cards.

But while Operation Obscura might be a little off-the-wall for the preconceptions, one card in particular stood out to me as something we could probably see: The Smuggler’s Part. This white spell (which can be seen in the gallery above) continues a recent initiative that WOTC has been very open about in trying to provide better card draw and mana boost options for white, which has traditionally struggled with both. “In terms of commanders, we haven’t found ways for [white] to gain card advantage and get some mana ramps in a very white way, and one way white can do that is to rule or tax. opponent,” Verhey explained. So Smuggler’s Share doesn’t actually draw cards from you unless your opponents do, and it doesn’t get you treasure tokens unless your opponents play more lands themselves (or crack lands). However, Verhey says, “I mean , that this card has a great chance to shine,” comparing it to cards like Smothering Tithe, a base treasure generator, though it’s much more “fair” than Dim, according to Verhey himself.

Commander Legends: Battle For Baldur’s Gate

The desire to help white was clear, but WOTC also expressed a desire to make the new Commander cards less generically powerful, instead of tweaking more specific strategies so they don’t become stand-alones that homogenize the format. I found Smuggler’s Share to be the more powerful deck, and Verhey says that’s on purpose (although it depends a little on what deck you’re playing). “We like to try to create four narrower niches that are kind of targeted – the only place where we’ve leaned a little bit on white, just because white has been missing a clamp for a long time, it has to be. a team. It’s growing that it makes a lot of sense.”
