To this day, no one knows exactly what happened when pilot Amelia Earhart and her crew attempted to circumnavigate the globe.
Here’s what we do know: Earhart and her co-pilot, Fred Noonan, were trying to circumnavigate the globe when their plane disappeared over the Pacific Ocean on July 2, 1937.
The most accepted theory is that his plane ran out of fuel and crashed into the ocean, but there are many conspiracy theories ranging from the improbable to the semi-convincing.

One theory recently gained a lot of attention because of a photo found in the National Archives. In the picture, a woman and a man who look like Earhart and Noonan can be seen on a pier on the beach of Saipan Island. Some believe the photo proves the two were captured by Japanese soldiers, which the Japanese military denies.

Steve Bechle maintains his innocence and provides an alibi for his wife’s disappearance. While her case was open, her husband declared her dead in his absence in 2004.

On Christmas Eve 1945, Soder’s house caught fire. Four of his nine children survived. Before the fire was put out, the house was completely gutted and the other five children were nowhere to be found, not even their teeth could be saved.
At the time, the fire marshal concluded the fire was hot enough to melt bones and issued a death certificate, but that claim has been disputed for years. Other theories suggest that Soderders was targeted by organized crime, that the fire was deliberately set, and that the ladder used to build his house was stolen.
