In the fall of 2019, my hospital said it is looking for doctors who want to undergo intensive training to become certified health and fitness instructors. Working with patients who have used coaching, I jumped at the chance. The experience is almost universally positive: Many people have achieved previously unthinkable goals, like losing weight they’d made an annual – and unsuccessful – New Year’s resolution. Some of the doctors I know who are also coaches seem to be able to combine different skill sets in a way that expands their ability to connect with patients and address their needs on a deeper level.
