This Better Homes and Gardens cookbook, published in 1969, was owned by Alton resident Christina Hall. Four pages of the book were digitized, some recipes were for “women only” and “men only”. “Ladies only” dishes include crab artichoke bake, a variety of appetizers, rolls and orange soufflé. “Men only” dishes include cheese-stuffed apples, assorted chicken, shrimp cocktail, Hessenfeffer, mashed potatoes, gravy, peas, carrots, “men’s favorite salad,” rolls, and red cherry pie. Eating small and light women reflected gender stereotypes in the 1960s.
