Target has revised the design of its Project 62 Candle; now it comes in a glass jar instead of ceramic and in different sizes. No other specs have changed, but we are testing it to make sure it still smells and burns as good as before.
Better Homes And Gardens Candles Review
Burning a scented candle is an easy way to create a pleasant, luxurious or relaxing atmosphere in any room. We spent 27 hours researching and testing 32 candles under $50 and found warm and woody, fresh and floral, and sweet and citrus candles for all your scent expectations. Whether you want your home to smell like Provençal perfume or you just need to hide that pet peeve, we’ve got you covered.
Warm Glow Candle Company (centerville)
The Hinoki Fantôme candle combines the heady smoke of cypress with warm amber, sweet vanilla, flowers and fresh musk notes.
Who it’s for: Someone who likes warm, woody scents but doesn’t want to feel like they’re sitting next to a real campfire.
Why it’s great: Hinoki Fantôme Scented Boy Candle has a complex, hard-to-pin-down scent (hinoki is a Japanese pine and
) Up front is earthy wood smoke, tinged with warm amber, sweet vanilla and just a hint of musky, floral warmth. Fragrant but not overpowering, it provides an elegant and aromatic backdrop for any occasion – whether it’s a dinner party or a daydream. The wick is well centered allowing it to burn evenly and the wax is well poured. In our meltdown test, this candle lost 12 grams of wax, which we think should give it a total burn time of 20 hours. We love the contrast of the white wax and wick with the black glass bowl, and the signature black and red label is modern and amazing.
Essential Oils Vs Candles; Which Is Better?
Flaws, but not deal-breakers: I noticed that several Scent Boy candle labels were not placed directly on the jar, and the glossy exterior of the bottle tends to show fingerprints. These are minor quibbles, but they affect the overall beauty. These candles also tend to burn with a lot of soot, but the black bowl helps to hide this and you can improve the burn by reducing the wick from time to time. Finally, this candle did not come with a lid. We would prefer it to have one as the lid helps to seal in the smell and maintain its potency as well as prevent dust from collecting on the surface of the wax.
We also liked: The scent of Boy Smells’ Polyamberous Candle is beautiful and unusual – with notes of geranium, tobacco flower, tonka bean, spice and incense. We prefer the traditional look and woody scent of our pick, but this is a close second.
P.F. Candle Co. The Amber & Moss candle isn’t the best-smelling candle of the ones we tried, but it has a nice, complex scent, with notes of pine resin, moss, eucalyptus and vanilla.
Who it’s for: Someone who wants to feel like they’re on a long – but really tiring – hike in the alpine forest.
Better Homes Gardens 18oz Scented Candle, Lavender Lemonade 2 Pack
Why it’s good: P.F. Candle Co. Amber & Moss Classic Soy Candle has a soft scent of pine sap and earthy moss, topped with notes of minty eucalyptus and rich vanilla. The wick is placed in the center and the wax is poured evenly. P.F. Candle Co. signature bowl. (a brown jar with a gold lid and a brown paper label) is simple, allowing it to blend seamlessly with most decorations. Hats are also easy to smoke after extinguishing the candle. Compared to most candles we’ve tested, this one is a bargain in terms of cost per ounce ($2.80) and longevity (it lost 9 grams of wax during our meltdown test, giving this candle an estimated burn time of 23 hours). Associate Editor Jason Chen (who admitted to spending more than $100 on a single candle) said it’s one of his favorite scents, and senior writer Lesley Stockton (who said she tends to “hate most candles”) is also a fan. .
Downsides, but not deal breakers: While we appreciate the overall aesthetic of this pot’s utility, its fake printed label seems a bit underwhelming. If it bothers you, however, it’s easy to remove with a razor or flip it over so the label faces the wall – the amber box looks great on its own. It’s also not the best-smelling candle we’ve tried, which may disappoint people who prefer strong scents. But it does smell better and harder than most candles in this price range.
We also liked: P.F. Candle Co. The Gold Coast Standard Candle has a sweet scent of pine and sage, warm honey and sea salt. We find Amber & Moss more complex and pleasant in general, but this is a good alternative.
The Paddywax Tobacco Flower Candle comes in an attractive ceramic pot and emits a sweet but intoxicating scent of cedar and patchouli.
Better Homes & Gardens 16oz Amber & Saffron Scented 3 Wick Dish Candle
Who’s it for: Someone who wants to fill their home with a subtle, smoky scent—and has an eye for beautiful tile.
Why it’s great: Paddywax’s Tobacco Flower Candle has notes of orange, cinnamon, patchouli, clove and sandalwood – and although it’s nicotine-free, its smoky scent is highly addictive. It makes us want to throw out a bluegrass record and sew patchwork wool. The scent is warm, spicy, earthy (but not earthy) and slightly floral, like a sprig of jasmine. This candle retails for about $2.70 an ounce, and we think the bottle alone—which is sturdy, sleek, and unmarked with a matching ceramic lid—makes it worth the price. You can easily reuse it as a small container, or (if you’re crafty) this container is a great choice for storing a new candle. In our tests, the Paddywax candle lost 13 grams of wax in one hour, so it should last 26 hours, according to our calculations. And this candle has two wicks, which helps to burn more evenly because it is quite large. Senior photo editor Sarah Kobos, who grew up near the Paddywax factory in Nashville, said she loves all of the company’s candles and stocks up when she’s in the area.
Flaws, but not deal-breakers: This isn’t the prettiest scent, compared to most of our picks, but it still offers a familiar aromatic background. It also has a somewhat slippery cast, with absurd waves of wax around the area. But we don’t think it’s a big deal – if you let the wax melt around the edges on the first burn, you should smooth it out.
We also liked: The Paddywax Spanish Moss Candle has the same bowl as the Tobacco Flower Candle – though with a different geometric design and a green glow instead of white. And this is more powerful. To us it smells like melons, bees, bee pollen, rainwater, grassy bushes and creeping vines.

The Apotheke Charcoal Candle has a premium scent, a unique aesthetic and one of the best burn times of any of our options.
Applies to: Someone who wants to recreate the feeling of being in a trendy restaurant or boutique hotel, but doesn’t want to spend more than $40.
Why it’s good: Apotheke Charcoal Candle smells like gum and cedar wood after a heavy rain. It’s a very nice scent, but it’s also soft enough that it’s not heavy or overpowering. Like our Peaceasake pick, this candle comes in a premium black pot that is able to hide dirt, fingerprints and other blemishes. It’s made from black wax, giving it a monochromatic look that feels both modern and classic. Besides the Voluspa candle, this candle has the best burn time (39 hours, by our calculations) of all our options, removing just 8 grams of wax per hour in our tests. The wax from the soy mixture is poured carefully and the wick seems well settled in the bowl.
Flaws, but not deal-breakers: As much as we like the look of this lamp, we wish it had a lid or dust cover. And while you could technically reuse the container to hold a pencil or makeup brush, it doesn’t look like it was designed with that use in mind.

We also liked: The Apotheke Earl Gray Bitters candle is as well-built and elegant as the charcoal, although the frosted glass shows more soot and grime than the black bowl. Herbs and flavors of orange bergamot stand out and the fragrance has an elegant finish. It will be especially good for someone who prefers strong scents.
The Palo Santo candle has the shortest burn time of our options. But what it lacks in longevity it makes up for in elegant beauty and refined fragrance.
Who’s it for: Someone who loves the intoxicating scent of palo santo but prefers to light candles instead of wood chips.
Why it’s great: Brooklyn Candle Studio’s small Palo Santo candle has a sweet scent that smells great.
