Quattro’s challenge was to design a special care home development for residents with varying degrees of dementia, a design that could be replicated around a central ‘hub’. The final design will allow for flexibility and offer 90 units around a central location. Amber Wood’s plan calls for 45 units with a luxurious home feel. The building and care services support for 45 adults with dementia will be in three model homes with 15 care rooms, each supported by a variety of community amenities, providing a unique environment to support residents’ daily lives. DSDC (Dementia Centre) also challenged us to achieve Gold standard in our Sterling Dementia Design Audit after completing Amber Wood.
Residents are part of families that are individually furnished, with friendly sound and acoustics designed and orientation chosen to give a modern and homely atmosphere.
Nursing And Rehabilitation
The house itself has a home-style interior with an open kitchen where residents are encouraged to participate in cooking and cooking.
The dining room is divided into large and small rooms, so that the housemates can eat in groups of 4-6 people, individually or together, depending on the personality and confidence of the residents.
Each house is organized around an internal courtyard with a peripheral corridor route that divides the 15 care rooms with two entrances, providing natural destination points along the route. The two access routes from the corridor to the courtyard allow an intimate, secure and enclosed garden area and can be part of the residents’ circuit routes.
The modern living room offers ample space, a separate cinema room means the living room can be TV-free, and the ‘cozy’ offers a quiet, meditative atmosphere.
Desert Garden Assisted Living
Residents are also offered activities in small common areas or private rooms where they can participate in groups or pursue their own interests.
In addition, the ‘Hub’ located at the center of the building offers a range of facilities, including a small shop with cafe, hair salon and meeting room, adding to the richness of the scheme.
The most important main garden area, spacious and secure, is designed to provide intimate spaces associated with each house, highlighting that families on the first floor have their own roof garden. Residents are free to roam around the garden, strategically placed seating along the route and at every destination.
We are delighted that the design of Quattro’s dementia care home in Amberwood has achieved Sterling Gold Standard certification.

Senior Homes Prove To Be Hotspots In Coronavirus Crisis
SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) – The ABC7 I-Team has confirmed that three residents of a San Mateo County nursing home have tested positive for the coronavirus and have been hospitalized.
San Mateo County Health confirmed to the I-Team that it is investigating how at least three residents of Atria Burlingame contracted the coronavirus. The emergency room and memory care facilities are closed to visitors and family.
Julie Burke told the I-Team’s Dan Noyce, “Families are panicking and not being able to see their loved ones, not being able to physically see them. We don’t know when we’re going to see them.”
Julie Berk’s parents are both Atria residents. His 101-year-old father is temporarily in the hospital, and he took his 85-year-old mother home for Sunday dinner. He wants both to be tested for the coronavirus, but Atria and the county say they won’t test if the patient doesn’t show symptoms.

Julie Berk: “So I know he doesn’t, for him and for me and for my partner and for my son.”
Another family of an Atria resident provided emails sent to the facility saying residents with the coronavirus had gone to the hospital last Thursday, Friday and Sunday. The rest of the residents are confined to their apartments and given food.

Amberwood Gardens in San Jose had five reductions in infections, the most of any nursing home in the Bay Area. The US Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services gave them the worst rating — 1 out of five — on a number of factors, including health inspections, quality measures and staffing levels.
Steven Earl, CEO of Amberwood, declined to be interviewed, but emailed the I-Team that “the company purchased the facility in October 2019 … we’re taking all the good things from the facility and building on the facility.” . Actions and actions are stronger. Prevention of infections is one of the focal points.”
“Infection control in nursing homes has been a crisis in California for decades,” said Mike Darke, attorney for the California Advocates for Nursing Home Reform. The number one problem, he says, is I-Team staff at nursing homes. “Mostly minimum wage workers who are untrained and therefore provide very little care. That really haunts us as the virus spreads in California.”
